Dr. Santaella attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where he earned academic honors and participated in a wide range of student activities. He later studied at Yale University, including a year at the Sorbonne in Paris, and went on to earn his medical degree from Jefferson Medical School.

Military and Medical Career

Dr. Santaella served in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and building a distinguished career in medicine. His work included leadership in pathology and contributions to medical scholarship through published work. During his military service, he received the Army Distinguished Service Medal for his leadership in securing accreditation for the pathology laboratory at Landstuhl, an achievement that reflected his high standards, professional excellence, and dedication to quality in military medicine.

After his military service, he practiced as both a pathologist and family physician in Southern California. He became known not only for his medical knowledge and professionalism, but also for his generosity and compassion. He often treated low-income patients without charge, reflecting a deep commitment to caring for others.

In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Santaella served as an honorary faculty member with the UCSD School of Medicine.
